What should I do when I see children in a car without a car seat?

Twice in the past few weeks I’ve seen cars with multiple young children inside that are clearly not in a car seat or secured in any way. The kids are roaming about as the car is moving! As a parent, it really upsets me to see other parents endangering their children’s lives this way. What should I do? I don’t feel safe confronting the parents. I’ve been tempted to call the police and report the license plate of the car. Do you think they would follow up on this?

when i was little in the 70’s, it was very common and legal for kids to ride in the beds of pick up trucks. car seats were unheard of. do i buckle myself and kids?yes. should you get into a perfect strangers business? no. you might be looking down the wrong end of a .45 someday.

i wiouldn’t approach them as usually they don’t appreciate it, and you’ll probably get amouthful of abuse, but i guess it also makesthem think about it.
Depends where you live-in NH they had a number you could call and give the licence plate to- they would write to them and give them advice. you could check out if your town has that.
it makes me mad too- such a tiny effort to save your kids lives

busy body. let the police catch them. its not a real crime in progress just bad judgment so let it be. Like francis said we used to ride in the back of trucks as kids now we have the safety police who say its not safe. safety nazis. you see it all day everyday dont you think the police have better things to do than answer your calls and everyone elses about children not in a car seat? idiots!

get the plate number, and color and everything of the car. report it, time and where. if the parents get in an accident, or even bumped from behind, the kids could be hurt real bad. i would not feel right if i didnt call 911 to report it, then find the car a mile down the road with hurt kids. it would eat at me. yes i am a mother. there is a rule in my car, if the seat belt isnt on, then the car dont move, but my son is 9, he knows the rules.

Depending on the state your living in the police might not do anything. Why? Well because in some states if you’re over 36 inches tall, or older than three, then you don’t have to be restrained in a child safety seat. I disagree with all the state who don’t make children less than 4′9″ sit in a safety seat, but many politicians care more about money, than making children safe. What some of my friends and I did was write a letter to our congressman, asking them to pass a law to toughen the requirements for children to be restrained in a safety device. And you know what it worked. Starting in September this year all children shorter than 4′9″ and who weigh less than 80 pounds have to be in a child safety seat. So just get some friends together and write you congressman. I’m only 21 and don’t have kids yet, but I still feel ad when I don’t see them properly restrained, no matter how old they are.

I take down the plate number and description and phone the police dept. I have had them pull people over a number of times.
