What is the history of the first ever piston used in an automobile?

There is so much information out there on pistons, i just need to know when it was first used in an automobile, i know in 1690 a piston was used in an steam engine, and it was used in a motorcycle engine thus the introducing of the four stroke cycle in 1876, does anyone have information, on the history of a piston in an automobile or know of any good websites? Also any new technology on pistons.
