What is causing more car to make a loud clicking sound whenever it is powered on?

I have a 2002 Ford Explorer and all of the sudden there has been a loud consistent clicking noise coming from the back left side of the car. I opened up the protective cover and the noise is coming from a black plastic box. There are no warning lights that have appeared yet. Should I be conserned? It does not seem to be affective the car’s performance, however, it is extremely annoying. Thanks for any suggestions on why this is happening!

Sounds like a wheel bearing is going. Better have it looked at soon !! If the “clicking” was upfront your CV joint(s) are going !!

Did you forget to unhook the dog from the rear bumper before starting out?

I’m having the exact same problem. It is intermittent in my case however. Does your explorer have rear A/C? If so, I have been told it could have something to do with that. Any ford mechanics out there…
