What causes a car to hesitate and backfire?
big_deezy asked:
I have a 91 jeep cherokee 6cyl and fuel injected, i have tried using fuel injector cleaner but hasnt stopped. During acceleration the car hesitates and backfires. What would cause this?? What would I need to fix?

Best look into the ignition timing. The only other thing to look for is low fuel pressure. A lean mixture takes longer to burn and could cause backfiring.

Many things like cracked or wet distributor cap, bad fuel injetor, burnt or chiped valve, bad spark plug wire and on and on. need a mechanic to look at it and or drive it.

could be dirty points in the distributor head, take of the distributor and clean the points, and or sparkplugs

A clogged fuel filter or low fuel pressure could cause this.
Change the fuel filter and check the fuel pressure.
Also check the distributor cap for carbon tracking and plug wires for arching.
It could be any number of senors and/or a plugged catalytic converter.
Check the ignition timing to.
This vehicle has no ignition points.
