How do you get a border collie to stop chasing cars?

I ♥ taking him for walks but he pulls on the leash and wants to chase cars. I know herding is in his nature but I am afraid he may pull hard and break free.
Any suggestions?
I am not trying to change his nature. I take him to the park and he chases the kids (mine) and the birds.
