What happens if you turn your car engine off and forget to placed it in parked?

I pulled over to to side of the street and turned my engine off and took the keys with me and forgot to place the car in parked and it was still in drive and it didn’t move. Is that normal? Does a car have to be in parked in order for the engine to start?
The car I am talking about is a 1996 Honda Accord EX.
