floatingfrisbee asked: If you live (or have lived) in NYC and have a car, can you share info on good, cheap garages to park in (specially on the UES) . If you park on the street, does that work out well? If you use Zip car or some service like that, do you think it is better than say renting from Hertz or one of the other car rental companies? Also if you have tips on reducing maintenance/insurance costs, I would love to hear about them.

Pickle asked: We are planning on buying a new car soon and trading in the old one. How does insurance work? I’d like to shop around for the cheapest deal but that isn’t possible if I don’t know what car we are getting yet. Also I have only just renewed my car insurance this year. Will there be a penalty if I cancel that policy?

l2yan asked: My car needs new weather stripping. Is any old car shop capable of doing that, or should I look to a specific category of automotive maintenance?

collegegirlshannon asked:
My husband and I are going to take advantage of the Cash for Clunkers program and trade in our old car for a new Smart car. What is the best way to get them to come down on their price?
Normally we would just pretend to leave and go somewhere else, but the old “just walk away and go somewhere else” bit doesn’t really apply here, because they are the only Smart car dealer in the area, and they know that. We have to buy the car new to get the $4500 rebate. Any suggestions?

Katherine R asked:
I am not a mechanic. I have no knowledge of engines at all. If I am looking under the hood of a car from 2002, what kinds of things are red flags?
The engine looks dirty. Is that important? When I test drive the car, what kinds of things should make me worry?
I know I should take the car to a mechanic, but it is in another city and I only have an hour or so to look at it, decide if I want it, and sign the paperwork, and fly home again. We are moving to a new city and I have basically one day to take care of so many things, the car, the apartment, the new contract for the new job, there is no way I can find time to go to a mechanic. The people who are selling it offered me the phone number of their mechanic to ask him questions. What should I ask him?
ANY advice is appreciated.
