How to safely jump start a car?

Can anybody give me step by step instructions on how to do so? My car died randomly before and I had no idea what the cables were called, which end to put where, and neither did the volunteer person who had their car to give mine a jump start. Help? I want to be prepared and knowledgable for the next time. Any car-savy people?

Pull the donor vehicle as close as convenient for cable length. Raise both hoods, and leave donor vehicle running. Always connect the discharged battery to the cables first by; connecting red color booster cable to positive post on the discharged battery, Positive post has a bigger post than the negative, and it should be marked with a cross + on the top of the post, or it is written as pos beside the post on the battery cover, all the wires and cables going to this post will usually be red in color or have a red streak or stripe.
Next connect the black booster cable to the negative post of the battery, a slightly smaller post with a minus - on the top of the post or written as neg beside the post on battery cover. All wires going to the post will be black in color. Ensure the other end of the cables remain separated when connected to any battery.
Next connect the red positive booster cable to the positive post on the donor vehicle, make sure it is the positive post. Connect the the black negative booster cable to the negative post on the donor battery. Increase the idle on the donor car about one quarter throttle, then try to start discharged vehicle. If the battery is really flat, you may need to run the other vehicle a few minutes with the cables hooked up to charge the discharged battery enough to start the vehicle. After starting, remove the negative cables first then the positive ones. make sure the cable ends never touch when hooking up or unhooking either battery. After vehicle is started, don’t shut off until charged, about a twenty minute drive.
