How resistant are automobile doors to pistol fire?
Johnathon H asked:
Does anyone know what kinds of bullets can be stoped/rendered un-lethal by the sheetmetal of a cardoor?
I’m just curious because I saw a car door with the paneling off, and it didn’t look thick enough to stop an air rifle! Thanks!

Car doors are not that bulletproof. Even a 9mm will find quite a few places to make it through. Trick

unless the car has been armored, or the bullet happens to hit some heavier internal door structute, it will not stop bullets, except from air rifles, and im sure some of the more powerful air rifles may penetrate Orion2506

They’re not very resistant at all! In fact, an air rifle’s about the only thing it’ll stop!
A car door is made of thin sheet metal, some internal structure and the inside paneling, that’s it!
Even something like a .32 acp will probably penetrate it just fine!
(You can’t alaways go by what you see on t.v., it’s just low budget effects for producers that can’t afford to waste a car!) Karl Wolf

It really depends.hollow point bullets are not made to penetrate very deep, they are made to expand. So hollow points SOMETIMES will not go all the way through, but your regular ball ammo will go through because they dont expand any, they may deform some but will come out the other side. catfishhunter

My friend lives out in the country he had a old junk van on his property we always shoot at it,the bullets go rite through it like it was made of paper.Buc shot also rips rite through it as well.I would not feel safe in a car if I was being shot at. ARMED AND DANGEROUS I

High-vel rounds (9mm, .38 Super Automatic, and .357 Auto-or magnum) will go through like a hot knife through butter. Slower subsonics (45ACP, .45Colt, .44Spl., .38Spl) will be slowed down a little more but go through all the same and have the potential to lethally wound you. I saw an episode of Walker:Texas Bonehead where his buddy (that bar owner) hid behind a newspaper machine to avoid catching a bullet. Now that is typical TV bull—- for you. david m

Just about as resistant as a beer can. Have you noticed how thin the sheet metal is on the cars produced today? Just press your finger against ant met surface and see the “give” of the metal. Bark in the 1950’s, if you get hit by a car, you go to the hospital. Today, if you get hit by a car, THE CAR GOES TO THE HOSPITAL.Does this answer your question? pathfinder

It depends on the door and the particular bullet. Some doors have thicker skins. And some Hollowpoints expand to much when hitting metal. It is very possible for the door metal to make the hollowpoint expand and leave itself pretty much useless. Dustin W

If all you have between you and bullets is a car door then that is better than nothing between you and the bullets. I will take a car door anytime & take my chances even though they are not very good.* dca2003311@yahoo.com

Don’t you get a kick out of people who take shelter behind a car and then lean against it and shoot over the top? Too much TV and movie watching. Bullets go through glass and door panels like a hot knife through butter. They also go through those empty 55 gallon drums that seem to litter the sets of movies and TV shows. acmeraven

If you have the window down the first shot from a small caliber pistol such as .25 acp or .22 LR will not go through. It will be stopped by the laminated glass inside the door. After that you are fair game. sargeArmy
