How do you get a border collie to stop chasing cars?
Sun In My Eyes asked:
I ♥ taking him for walks but he pulls on the leash and wants to chase cars. I know herding is in his nature but I am afraid he may pull hard and break free.
Any suggestions?
I am not trying to change his nature. I take him to the park and he chases the kids (mine) and the birds.

Find a local herding group who has farm animals available to herd, let your dog enjoy their gift, without the risk of loosing their life.
Always make sure your collar is secure, and give a firm correction. Remember obdience is a good defense to bad habits. Use, learn it, love it.
Best wishes.

Take him on even more walks to get him used to the cars going by and if you are afraid of him getting loose maybe you should get a choker chain.

I’d suggest more obedience training - border collies are stars at it - and finding another type of restraint that gives you more control - a Halti or Gentle Leader head halter or a prong collar. No choke chains - they can damage the esophagus if a dog pulls too hard.

It is in the breed nature to chase everything that moves. Try getting him into flyball, agility, and/or herding. This will stimulate his brain, and also get him the excercise he needs. As for the pulling, using a gentle leader or a halti to stop the pulling. If he is only pulling at cars on walks, where he is restrained, dont worry to much, I would say that the chances are pretty slim that the collar or leash will break.

try a gentle leader or halti.
my aussie pulled like crazy, but hates the pressure on his nose.
I can control him with one finger on the leash now.

Sign up for obedience classes and train him to walk properly on leash.

I would go to your local library and get some books on this topic.

Be patient, take your dog for lots of walks around cars and show him (or her) how to react to cars. Speak in controlling voice and yank on the chain. Take the dog out and let him run free and have fun with your dog.
