How do you clean gasoline from an automobile carpet?
Mulv asked:
I was filling up the gas can for the tractor and the attendant (NJ) did not secure the lid on the container. Now my SUV smells of gasoline. How do I clean this?

Use plenty of baking soda on the spot….then vacumn it out after a couple of hours. I have also used charcoal to absorb odors. Make sure its the plain kind…without the self starting fluid in it. Place a small cardboard box ( shoe box ) filled with charcoal in the car near the spot….it should absorb some of this odor. You can also try some Fabreeze…it helps. extex_cop

Coffee grounds neutralize almost any smell. I would take some and rub it into the carpeting where the gas was spilled, leave it a day or two, and then vacuum out. You may need to repeat a couple of times
I pour a five-pound box of baking soda on it. I leave it on for about a month. You can vacuum it up and put on new if you want, but it doesn’t decrease the time it needs to stay there. Also, keep the windows open as much as possible while driving or parked.
baby powder to soak the rest of it up and to get rid of the odor
kitty litter to clean up spilled gas
clay kitty litter over the area of the gas spill. After a day, we vacuumed it and covered it with the litter again. I think we did this two or three times with great results. There was no more gas odor.Be careful not to allow any moisture near the cat litter or it could turn into “mud” on your carpet, and be sure to clean with a vacuum with very strong suction to get all the litter out
White Vinegar and water mixed about 1/2 to 1/2. When it dries, put baking soda on it. Leave it there overnight and then vacuum it off.
Good Luck ! mshonnie

Wipe with hot water and soap.Scrub up as much as possible. Then spray it with vinegar straight out of bottle.Let dry then spray it again.Baking soda may draw out the oils in the gas.Hope this works. Maw-Maw

If it spilled on the floor mats and the floor mats remove.. Take the mats out of the car and wash with dishsoap and a stiff bristle brush… Rinse with a hose and hang to dry ! Or throw away old floor mats and buy new ones… Good luck pebblespro
