How do police determine how fast a car had been traveling after an accident has occurred?

car
Candi asked:

The formula r=2 sqrt5L can be used to approximate the speed r, in miles per hour, of a car that has left a skid mark of length L, in Feet. How far will a car skid at 55 mph? 90 mph

  1. Ted Says:

    Simply plug the numbers into the equation and solve or rearrange the equation first.

    55=2 sqr 5L divide by 2
    27.5=sqr5L square both sides
    756.25 = 5L divide by 5
    L = 151.25 at 55mph

    or rearrange the equation r^2=4(5L)=20L
    L= r^2 / 20
    L = 90^2 / 20 = 405 at 90 mph
