Scientists are not close.

However there are undoubtedly thousands of crazy wanna-be inventors with little or no understanding of the laws of physics and even less common sense who would have you believe they are right around the corner.

Does the technology exist to provide people with personal flying craft? Absolutely.

Is it a good idea? Given that people can't even manage driving cars around without crashing them into each other, creating mind-numbing numbers of deaths on a regular basis, probably not. That's why pilot training is so extensive. The margin for error in flight is much smaller than that for an automobile, and seeing the way most people drive, there's no way I would want them piloting an aircraft, even if it was a jetpack.

Not close. And if it were technologically feasible it would be dangerous when controlled by a human. Flying isn't like driving a car.

Early jet pack studies in the 60s and later experiments all came up with the same conclusion. You cannot lift a man and sufficient amount of fuel to allow more than a very short period of flight time. The famous Bell Rocket Belt from the 60s that James Bond used had a total flight time of 20 seconds.

Currently, that technology is still far away. We have created jetpacks, but the amount of fuel that they can carry limits flying time to about 30 seconds, and are VERY expensive. However, a new scientific breakthrough will be needed to provide sufficient power to lift a person, as well as sustain the person in the air for an acceptable amount of time.

It will come, one day. Perhaps in 100 years, or even in 20 years. The first plane the Wright Brothers flew was only in the air for 12 seconds, but now, 100 years later, airplanes cross the globe effortlessly carrying hundreds of passengers and flying at high speeds for many hours. The same case happened with trains, phones, computers, and soon, space travel.

Currently, MOLLER (www.moller.com) is developing a flying car that could just be the forerunner of your dream. First, giant aircraft, then compact flying cars, and finally, personal flying devices.

Another possibility would be that technology would develop in a way that a personal flying device would not be necessary. Teleportation may be developed, or an ultra fast internet service would make travel obsolete, as there would be no need for it. The only problem would be obesity, as people would walk less, and get heavier.

The future awaits...

Idea is good but sorry to say your thinking is delayed or too late. There are vtol crafts, Mr jun Y a yahoo Q & A member is also searching fund for his flying car with vtol style.
For your kind information pls visit my page in yahoo Q & A with a concept of rescue craft ,vertial take off and landing and flying in different angle with a jet turbine without combustion and exhaust section, powered by haudraulic from center of the craft with a horizontal 2/4 stroke internal combustion engine ,which I am going to start making from coming few days.
The difference of lifting in my theory is different from other craft which I already explained in previous question.
I dont want to be a scientist I just want to be a blesser if I can thats enough. So I put open questions, exchange views,No patents,No claims, just for everybody,Let them use in what way they require.
For your device there is a natural air, ground and water rule by which you cannot break it though you can make it.few americans has their own personal craft but are permited to limited areas only.So imagine if every one can use this device there will be no more twin towers in future and people cannot sleep soundly.I know and i am confident that some people from this earth can make a free energy device and make the human life easier but the subject free will make the world lousy. So if you want to have this I assure you can get it but remember the rule of universe , Still if you dont want to give up then you should be stronger and powerful than US president Mr george w bush to acheive it ha. ha.

that a flying pack pack or jet pack has been done but is very un ifshent and can only hold unof fuel to go about 100ft

flying cars how ever should be main stream in about 501 years
there is all ready a proto type made and it is based off of the plane that can fly straight up in the air (they are both driven by a computer the comads are too had for a person to do manualy)
and this so calle d"flying car" should be in emrgnysy vicals within about 20years they will be arou very soon but wount be main stream till about 50 years when thell be mass perdused
