Car problems with acceleration?

I seem to be having problems with my car. Here is a quick summary. I have a 6 speed, standard, toyota celica gts. When I accelerate in gears 1-4 I press the gas, the rpm’s shoot way up and the car takes time to speed up. The car acts as if I am in the wrong gear. I can assure you, I am not. It does ok in 4-5 gears when i simply press the gas, but I get on the gas anymore than a slight press, it does the same thing. The rpm’s and the engine rev really high, close to the red zone on the rpm indicator and the car simply doesn’t respond as it should. Again, it feels to me as if I need to downshift, but that isn’t the issue. In 6th gear, the car doesn’t even respond to the gas, just the rpm’s rev up when i press the gas. The car does not accelerate at all. Could this be an issue with my clutch, perhaps some belt or even a simple tune up?
Thanks guys! I was thinking the clutch could be an issue.

I have 50k miles, but almost all city driving.

Like what if there’s an oil leak or the shocks on the car is blown, will the check engine light show up for those too? What kind of problems will the car be able to catch and what WON’T it be able to catch?

Has anyone heard of anyone having car problems because they didn’t change their timing belt?

I hear many people saying you should change your timing belt yada yada yada, however, does anyone know of anyone who has had engine failure due to timing belt not being replaced? It sounds to me like it’s another way for car dealerships/manufacturers to rip off the American public. What do you think? By the way, I drove my 93 Nissan pathfinder for 135000 miles without changing a timing belt, however, there were other problems.

Is there a sight where you can ask questions about your car problems?

My car chugs when its cold. It also does not start when it sits and its real hot outside. I put ether in the carb and it started. Could this be a fuel filter or a sensor or what?

Can you help diagnose my car problems?

When I start my car, and next few minutes, my car is fine. After a few minutes it begins to develop a small miss when stopped. About 10-20 minutes into a ride it will start to develop a good shake when stopped. Soemtimes it will start shaking pretty good and my oil light will flicker, possibly due to low pressure. My temperature is higher than normal and at times it starts to overheat. I also go through water fairly quickly. While driving I never really feel a problem. My mechanic told me to change my oil to fix it. I told him I disagreed, but since it was getting near to being due anyway I went ahead and did it. Still having the same problems. Any help would be appreciated.

When it comes to car problems is it better to trust the dealer for a better diagnosis?

Ive been having allot of trouble with my car lately. It shifts terribly and one time I pushed on the gas it didn’t even go anywhere. Also my RPM meter has been acting strangely and dropping below 5 on the RPM dial. I just need to know can a dealer diagnosis the problem better than a regular mechanic because it is there car?

I have a 1988 Pontiac Grand Am. After driving for a short period of time (usually about 20 mins.) and after having to sit in idle once I start going again the car will start to buck when I come to a stop the car will die. When the car sits for about 20 mins. it will start back up and act like nothing ever happend. Also the car heats up when in idle. I have ruled out torque converter.
