yes if this acceleration is deceleration or retardation i.e. it moves with certain velocity then using the brakes to reduce this velocity mramahmedmram

Yes it can. This means that the car is travelling north and is slowing down. (Assuming that both the velocity and acceleration are positive)
A positive acceleration South is equivalent to the negative acceleration North. Katie
